GAR’s Educator Initiative Grant (EIG) Program is an annual program separate and distinct from the Foundation’s regular grant-making in the area of education. GAR’s Educator Initiative Grant Program offers grants of $1,000 to $15,000 to teams of educators from kindergarten through grade 12 (K-12) who work together to develop, implement, and assess instructional strategies that:

  • Help students meet Ohio’s academic standards
  • Encourage collaboration among professionals to improve lesson design
  • Help schools achieve goals identified in their school improvement plans

For recent awards, click here . Teams of educators from public, private, parochial or charter schools in Summit County are eligible to apply. A team must consist of at least two K-12 classroom teachers. Administrators may also be team members, but should submit applications only as part of a group of educators who will share responsibility for implementing the proposed project.

Grant workshops are conducted for interested educators each fall and winter to describe the application process, explain the decision criteria, and answer questions. (Click here to view the PowerPoint presentation delivered at the fall 2007 EIG workshop.) Application deadlines are in February for grants to be used in the next school year. Decisions are announced in May.

Additionally, each fall, the EIG Program sponsors an Annual Conference that is free and open to all educators. The event includes a keynote speaker on current education topics, along with an exhibition area in which grant winners from the previous year display or demonstrate results from their projects. The fall 2008 conference was held October 14, 2008.  Click here for details.

Before applying, all educator teams seeking funds to supplement, reinforce, or otherwise enhance educational achievement of K-12 students should ensure that their programs have been coordinated with relevant school programs and have received the endorsement of the educators responsible for those school programs.
For 2009, grant awards are available as follows:

  • Grants of $1,000 to $5,000 for projects in one or more classrooms
  • Grants of $10,000 for a project or program involving a department project for grades 7 through 12.
