Step One: Eligibility

In order to receiving funding from GAR Foundation, the first step is to determine eligibility.  All potential applicants should review our mission, funding areas, and funding criteria before making initial contact with GAR.

 

Our Mission: GAR invests in Greater Akron to promote quality of life, education, and economic opportunities for its people, in a culturally vibrant community.

 

Our grants are awarded to Summit County (OH) organizations, programs, and projects which foster the needs of the community within our four primary areas of giving: education, basic needs and independence, civic enhancement, and arts and culture. The grants we award are prioritized by those which enhance quality of life, education, and economic opportunities in the Greater Akron community. What GAR funds:

  • Programs that fall within our four funding areas of giving: education, basic needs and independence, civic enhancement, arts and culture
  • Organizations or programs that benefit Summit County, OH residents
  • Organizations that have been recognized as tax-exempt under Section 501(c)(3) of the Internal Revenue Code

 

What GAR does not fund:

  • Individuals
  • Private, non-operating foundations
  • National organizations
  • Religious organizations
  • Disease specific organizations
  • Medical research or hospitals
  • Food pantries; except to regional food banks
  • Special events and fundraisers
  • Computer hardware, software, and related equipment in schools

 

What makes a strong request:

The ability to:

  • Demonstrate the ability to show how future funding needs will be met
  • Communicate and cooperate with other organizations pursuing similar or complementary goals
  • Establish measurable outcomes that are shared and valued by the sector
  • Provide substantial community benefits
  • Respond to community needs
  • Reflect innovative goals and strategies
  • Employ a capable, experienced staff
