About GAR

Mission & History

GAR invests in Greater Akron to promote quality of life, education, and economic opportunities for its people, in a culturally vibrant community.

Established in 1967, GAR Foundation was born of the philanthropic desire of the Roush family to support the needs of those in the local community.

GAR Foundation is a private foundation founded in 1967 by Galen Roush and his wife Ruth. Galen was the co-founder of Roadway Express, one of the nation’s largest trucking companies. The Roushes established GAR Foundation to benefit their beloved home community of Akron. Through the years, GAR has awarded over $200 million in grants  to nonprofit organizations who advance our strategies in the areas of education, basic needs and independence, arts and culture, and civic enhancement. Our mission is to invest in Greater Akron to promote quality of life, education, and economic opportunities for its people, in a culturally vibrant community.

Today, GAR's distribution committee meets quarterly to make grantmaking decisions on behalf of the Foundation.
